The Grand Canal, also known as the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, is one of China's greatest engineering achievements and has played a crucial role in China's history and culture. This ancient waterway spans over 1,700 kilometers and connects Beijing in the north with Hangzhou in the south, passing through Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang provinces. Construction of the canal began in the 5th century BC and continued over the centuries, with major expansions occurring during the Sui and Tang dynasties. Today, the Grand Canal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains an important waterway for transportation and irrigation.
One of the most remarkable features of the Grand Canal is its length. At over 1,700 kilometers, it is the longest man-made waterway in the world.
